Chalky teeth

When teeth crumble and hurt

Chalky teeth

Perhaps you have already noticed it in your child: a tooth looks whitish-yellow, has spots or even starts to crumble. Chewing is often followed by a dull ache or pain. In such cases these may be what are known as chalky teeth, medically “molar incisor hypomineralisation” (MIH).

As a children's dentist, we are seeing this condition more and more often here in Gelsenkirchen too, and we take it very seriously.

What exactly are chalky teeth?

Chalky teeth develop when the tooth enamel does not form properly. The result: the tooth is softer, more prone to decay and breaks more easily. The first permanent back teeth (molars) and front teeth (incisors) are especially affected. The causes? Not yet fully understood. It is suspected that environmental influences, infections or certain medications in the first years of life play a role.

How to recognise chalky teeth

Watch out for these signs:

  • Patchy, yellow-brown or whitish discolouration
  • Sensitivity when brushing or eating
  • Cracks or chipping on the teeth
  • Frequent decay despite good dental care

If you notice such changes, don't hesitate. Come straight to us at the practice!

What we can do at Zahnfine Kids!

We check carefully how badly the tooth is affected. Then we decide together with you on the right treatment:

  • Fluoride treatment to strengthen the enamel
  • Resin fillings or sealants
  • In severe cases: crowns or special protective caps

Our goal is always to keep the tooth, avoid pain and prevent further problems.

As a children's dentist in Gelsenkirchen, we rely on child-friendly methods, a great deal of empathy and working together with you as parents.

Our advice: act early

The earlier chalky teeth are recognised, the better we can act. So bring your child for regular check-ups, ideally twice a year.

At Zahnfine Kids we are here for you. We help with expertise, heart and a sympathetic ear.
