Fissure sealing

Stopping decay before it starts

Fissure sealing

Many parents know the feeling: despite regular brushing, decay still appears, especially on the back teeth. Why? The deep grooves on the chewing surfaces, known as fissures, are hard to clean. Plaque stays there and bacteria have an easy time. This is exactly where fissure sealing comes in: a simple but effective measure that we carry out every day at Zahnfine Kids, your children's dentist in Gelsenkirchen.

What are fissures, and why are they a problem?

Fissures are small depressions in the permanent back teeth. They are so fine and winding that even the best toothbrush often cannot reach them completely. Decay can develop quickly here, especially in children whose brushing technique is still developing.

Even when no pain is felt, decay may already be progressing beneath the surface, unnoticed and dangerous.

How does fissure sealing work?

In fissure sealing, the grooves on the chewing surfaces are closed with a special resin. It is quick, does not hurt and protects reliably. The procedure:

  • Cleaning the tooth surface
  • Brief preparation with a gel
  • Applying the sealing material
  • Hardening with light

The result: smooth surfaces to which plaque hardly sticks. The tooth is protected in the long term!

When is the right time?

We recommend the first fissure sealing as soon as the permanent back teeth come through, usually between the ages of 6 and 8. Statutory health insurers generally cover the full cost of this service.

As an experienced children's dental team, we pay close attention during check-ups to when the best moment for sealing has come.

Our advice for you.

Have the fissure sealing checked regularly, ideally twice a year as part of individual prophylaxis. This is the only way to keep the protection lasting.
